FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS:
I get plenty of questions
e-mailed to me, and the same questions come up again and again. These
are some of the most common questions that I receive, all here, in one
place for you to skim through.
What is the beta version and
where can I buy it?
This is the most
common question I get. People just don't take the time to read
my little briefing atop the beta section... The "beta version"
of any game is just the name for the stage in development, when
changes are being made to the game. There is no one beta version,
because changes are always in progress. Odds are there may be
some Goldeneye cartridges left over at Rareware from beta testing,
but they would not be accessible to the public, nor would they
be sold for any amount of money. All the "great things" inside
the beta stages amaze us, but we must keep in mind that they were
removed for good reasons. Mainly problems with the programming,
in getting the game to function properly. The only exception,
are the "All
Bonds" characters, who were apparently removed for legal reasons.

Is there a Gameshark
code for the beta version?
No. Contrary to
popular belief, the "beta version" isn't hidden in the
game cartridge. Many beta items, characters, images, vehicles
and objects are, however. Numerous Gameshark codes can be used
to alter the existing objects in the game, and replace them with
beta objects. See my Gameshark
Modifiers or Action
Replay Modifiers for codes to access many beta things.
What are Gameshark and Action
Replay?
These two devices, are
known as video game enhancers. They attach to the bottom of your N64 game
cartridge, and plug into your N64. They are used to change things in the
game. They can allow you to do anything, from being Invincible to complete
your missions, to activating long lost items and characters. They accomplish
this, by using the codes that you enter, to alter the game's memory.
Gamesharks are sold in the US, and are made by Interact. Action Replay
is the European counterpart to Gameshark.
How did you get inside the Jungle
Tower?
This question ranks right
up there near the top of frequent questions I've received. Many visitors
to this site have seen the screenshot of myself atop the tower in the
Jungle, (http://goldeneye.detstar.com/screenshots/jungletower.jpg)
and demand to know how it's done. Well, it's a code for Gameshark, and
it’s not an amazingly impressive Gameshark either. It's simply the Jungle's
Moonjump code, D0064F30
0040, 810C03DC
412B. With the code, you
float upwards when walking over an elevation, and holding 'B'. I just
took screenshots while floating through the tower, making it seem as if
I was actually standing inside of it.
How do I enter the push
button codes? They don't work!
There is a trick
to entering the codes, and not everyone gets it right away. The
codes are done in ten steps, and each step is performed the same
crucial way. Another important thing, is that the directional
buttons of the code use the control pad, and not the control stick.
Example: "L
+ down"
Start holding the "L" button, and hold it for a second.
While still holding "L", begin holding down on the control
pad. Keep holding down both buttons for an additional second,
and then release them at the same time. Proceed to the next step
of the code.
How do you activate the Gameshark's
Memory Editor?
You need a Gameshark Pro in order to view the game's RAM with
the Memory Editor. In addiction to that, you also need the N64
Expansion Pak.
On the final setup screen before you load the game, make sure that the
Code Generator is turned ON, and press start. When playing the game, press
the Gameshark Button (the small black button on the front of the Gameshark)
to enter into the Code Generator, and Memory Editor.
How do I get the Aztec and Egyptian
levels?
You need to complete every
mission up to the Cradle on Secret Agent, to open the Aztec. For the Egyptian,
you need to beat every single level (including Aztec) on 00 Agent difficulty.
What is the push button code
to open up the Egyptian level?
So far, if such a code
exists, I have not seen it. There are codes to open every level before
it, including Aztec. No such code has been found to unlock the Egyptian.
How come I can't edit every
Multiplayer character with a Gameshark/Action Replay?
Most characters have heads
that are separate from their bodies. This means that you can customize
the heads each receive. However, some characters' heads are actually part
of their bodies, and therefore can't have another head used on their body.
All of the characters who have an actual photo on the character select
screen cannot be customized, except for Bond, and Mishkin.
So, you just can't use the heads and bodies when creating your
"new" characters.
How do you escape from the Train
on 00 Agent, and keep Natalya alive?
It's extremely
difficult to pull this off, because Natalya finishes her work
on the computer at almost the same second that the Train explodes.
But, it's possible to buy yourself some extra time... When you
first enter the final train car where Ourumov is holding Natalya
at gunpoint, step to the side, so that Xenia is directly behind
Ourumov. Shoot and kill Ourumov, and keep firing to hit Xenia
after Ourumov falls. Xenia will say that she's hit, and then leave
with Alec as usual. If you pull this off, you'll magically be
given extra time to complete the level. See my Train
walkthru for more details.
How did you stack the tanks
in the Facility?
The infamous screenshot that I created (http://goldeneye.detstar.com/screenshots/stacked2.jpg)
is almost as famous as the stacked tanks screenshot from the pre
release version of the game... (http://goldeneye.detstar.com/beta/stackedtanks.jpg).
It is of course, a Gameshark code that I spent considerable time
on. I came close, but I wasn't able to perfect it. I'd post the
code, but it's not completely finished, and I don't think it ever
will be. The way the game was programmed has prevented me from
perfecting the code.
Is it even possible to earn
the Invincible cheat?
Many people have
thought that the feat of beating the Facility on 00 Agent in 2:05
or less is impossible. It does take skill, no doubt about it.
But it also takes luck. It's almost necessary that Dr. Doak be
in the upstairs laboratory. He starts in a random location every
time you start the level, and there's nothing you can do about
that. There are many tactics that people have used to earn the
cheat. I've tried them all, and have recorded myself beating the
level the easiest way, in 1:43. When using these tactics, with
a bit of practice, it really isn't that hard. Download my video
from http://goldeneye.detstar.com/video/facility_143.mpg.
What would you consider the
hardest levels to be?
It's a tough call,
but I'd say some of the hardest levels (on 00 Agent) are the Train,
Control, Caverns, and Aztec. It all depends on how you go about
beating the level though.
Where is the Spyder
gun that's listed in the Instruction Booklet?
The Spyder weapon
is still in the game, only under a different name. The booklet
was printed before the game was completed. The Spyder gun is actually
the Klobb, which was named after Ken Lobb of Nintendo. View a
whole bunch of other differences between the booklet and final
game in my
Booklet/Game section.
How did you convert
your Gameshark codes to Action Replay Codes?
Not all GS codes
can be easily converted to AR. But for codes that begin with 801,
you just need to use a hexadecimal calculator. There's on on the
Windows Start Menu. Just set it to 'Hex' (Hexadecimal) instead
of the default 'Dec' (Decimal). From there, you just need to take
the Gameshark code, and subtract the value 18C70 from the
memory address.
I've used the example
of a code I hacked to modify the Dam's first alarm. The Gameshark
code is 801E8949 00xx. Of course,
00xx is NOT involved in the calculation,
because it's simply the effect that the code has.
Remember, this is for
codes that begin with 801...

How old are you?
Somewhere between the
ages of 16 and dead. That's a pretty shady answer, but I'm a pretty shady
individual.
How long did it take you to
finish Goldeneye?
Three months, total, to
beat every level, and every cheat. Not three months straight, of course.
I beat about half of it, and then took a break for several weeks. I then
went back and completed the rest.
What inspired you to create
this site?
My personal project for
Multiplayer strategies was going well, and I decided it could be made
into a site. But in addition to that, I found that there were very few
"ultimate sources" for Goldeneye 007 on the web. I wanted to change that,
and make a massive Archive of all the miscellaneous, interesting, and
special things about Goldeneye 007, primarily geared to those who have
finished the game completely.
How long did it take to make
the site?
I started working
on the site in late June of 1999. The site remained under construction
on my computer, until I uploaded it on September 24, 1999. Since
then, I've added a whole ton of stuff to it, but three months
is the time it took to make the original update. Of course I could
have "completed" the site in a month, but everything had to be
"perfect".
