At
one time in Goldeneye's development, you could actually
choose the former James Bond actors as characters for Multiplayer.
In addition to Pierce Brosnan, you could
also select Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and Timothy Dalton.
These former Bonds were removed from the game before it
was completed though.
To the right, is Sean Connery's tux from a Goldeneye advertisement.
He appears to be holding two ZMGs. The background is the pause
screen. I don't think he actually was on the pause screen.
He was likely just pasted into here from somewhere else for
this promotional graphic.
The
only part of 'All Bonds' that remains in the game, are the
character select photos for Multiplayer, which can be activated
with Gameshark or Action Replay.
The suits that belong to the characters seem to be long gone.
This screenshot was created with a Gameshark, by replacing
the photos of existing characters with photos of the former
Bonds.
In this shot, each of the Bond characters has their real name
below. It's unclear as to whether each Bond would have his
actual name, or whether each of them would be simply referred
to as 'Bond'.
Here's
a similar screenshot to the one above. The characters have
each been named 'Bond' for this shot.
Goldeneye
007 Demo Video
Thanks
to a Wal-Mart promotional video I received from SubDrag, I've
been able to post new screenshots from pre-release Goldeneye.
The clip show's the title screen, but the word 'Goldeneye'
is missing the red ring around the 'E' that's found in the
final version.
But of course the most interesting part of the video, is the
fact that four different photos of the James Bond actors appear
on the game folders. This would have been a neat detail, had
these characters not been removed from the final game.
Each
Bond has their own folder, and you get to see a closer image
when you select a file. This was likely just done for detail.
But is it possible that some of the old Bonds may have been
intended to star in bonus missions?...
Here
we have the camera showing off the Dam, the game's first mission.
I haven't noticed any differences. We get the same view of
the starting area, then the camera closes in on James Bond.
Immediately
after the cinema introduction to the Dam mission, the message
"Objective D: Completed" appears on screen. Bond
has completed an objective without even doing anything...
Having an objective completed like this was probably not intended
for the final version of the game, and would have likely just
have been done with the Debug menu, for testing purposes.
Once again,
many thanks to SubDrag for sending this cool video clip.
For Your Hands
Only...
We've
seen only a handful of pre-release screenshots that actually
show Sean Connery's white tux. But a Gameshark code has been
found to unlock another piece of this mystery...
This
code changes Bond's arms in the Dam mission. You won't notice
anything different about Bond himself though... But you will
when you hit pause, or use your Remote Mine detonator. Even
though Bond isn't wearing a white tux, his hands are shown
wearing white sleeves.
This
"new" sleeve isn't used by the final game, but it's
still here in the game's memory. Could this be a clue that
the Bond characters were considered for the solo missions?
Gameshark

04 snow bond 05 white cuff
06 tux bond (black cuff)
07 tux bond (black cuff)

In
addition to that white cuff, there's another strange occurrance...
The game's memory has Connery's white cuff, plus three
black cuffs...
Sleeves for Dalton, Moore, and Brosnan?
Goldeneye
007 Instruction Booklet
Most
players eventually came across this screenshot, found on
page 20 of the Instruction Booklet. We can clearly see a
character wearing a white tux with a rose corsage, in the
Complex arena. This character was nowhere to be found in
the final game. It was the hope of Gameshark hackers that
the suit could somehow be found in the game's memory.
To the right, is Sean Connery wearing the suit in Goldfinger.
That
screenshot wasn't the only evidence of Sean Connery found
in the Instruction Booklet... On page 21, we see a character
select screen. To the far left, we can See Connery's select
photo. It's the same photo that can be accessed with a Gameshark.
It
was thought that Connery was the only Bond to appear in
the Instruction Booklet... But it appears as if Timothy
Dalton is there as well. Everyone assumed that the other
visible Bond was Pierce Brosnan. But when that photo was
scanned and enlarged, we can see some extra white material
near the Bond's hands.
Pierce Brosnan's suit does not have any white material there,
but Dalton's tux does.
Here
are screenshots of Dalton's tux and Brosnan's tux. When
we compare Brosnan's tux to Dalton's, we don't see any white
like in the booklet screenshot. We can see the white material
in the photo of Dalton's suit though.
Thanks to Connery_Bond for pointing this out.
So,
the lone Multiplayer screenshot from the booklet shows not
only one, but two of the 'All Bonds' characters. If the only
two visible characters are Bonds, chances are that the other
two characters are Bonds as well.
'Beta' Video
Clip
A
promo video, recorded before the game was released actually
shows Connery's white tux. Connery appears through a doorway,
and dodges a few bullets that Oddjob fires at him.
Connery
makes sure to show his face to the camera, and then narrowly
avoids being shot. Just as he dashes away, player four picks
up a Blackhawk Magnum.
This video is full of juicy 'beta' tidbits, including the
original KF7 Soviet. It's strange how such a short video
can show so many 'beta' things. The 'white tuxed' Bond almost
seems to dance and show off his costume.
Could Rareware have intentionally made sure that we'd see
these things before they were removed?
You can download the movie
clip from the Video
Downloads section.
The
Faces of James Bond
Since
we only have a few screenshots of the 'All Bonds' suits in
action, it's hard to get a good look at the character faces
on the suits. This shot to the left is about the best one
that exists. It's on the white tux, but it really doesn't
look much like Sean Connery.
Rare did comment about the white tuxedo from the Instruction
Booklet, which is the same tux from this screenshot:
"That character was wearing one of the outfits designed
for the Bonds that were removed from the
game."
Rare mentions only the Bond's suit, which seems to imply that
it's not one of the Bond characters who is wearing the suit.
The face seen on Connery's tux in all of these 'beta' screenshots
could simply have been meant as a fill.
There are rumors
that Rare originally planned to have the former Bond characters
in the extra missions. Both of the hidden missions feature
things from past Bond films. So, playing these missions
as one or more of the previous Bond actors could have definitely
been a possibility.
To
the left, is Bond's face from the regular missions. To the
right, is the face that Bond has during the extra missions.
They're completely different heads. The head from the extra
missions bears a resemblance to a young Sean Connery, don't
you think?
The All Bonds... In Perfect Dark
Two years after
the 'All Bonds' suits were removed from Goldeneye 007,
Rareware released Perfect Dark. Many people gave referred
to this new game as the sequel to Goldeneye, calling it "Goldeneye
2". Shortly after the game's release, gamers discovered
something after completing 7 Combat Simulator Challenges...
Four different James Bond tuxedos appeared in Perfect
Dark's Combat Simulator. The characters don't have default
heads, and they don't have names. They're simply labeled"Dinner
Jacket". If you use a Gameshark or Action Replay, you
can find a character called "djbond" in Goldeneye's
memory. DJBond (Dinner Jacket Bond) is the suit that Bond
wears for Multiplayer.
All
four of the 'All Bonds' have a reunion in the Felicity arena,
which most of us know better as the Facility. They aren't
actually the Bond actors, but getting to choose their famous
tuxedos is as close as we're going to get.
Just
another screenshot of the Bond suits from Perfect dark, during
a four player match in the Temple.
Bond Suits
and Actors
Each
of the tuxedos worn by the 'All Bonds' characters were actually
modeled after a suit that each of the actors wore when they
played James Bond.
Pierce Brosnan's tux is of course from GoldenEye.
Sean Connery's famous white tux with the rose corsage is
from Goldfinger.
The suit designed for Roger Moore is from Moonraker.
Shown here is Moore's tux from For Your Eyes Only,
which is similar to his suit from Moonraker.
And finally Timothy Dalton's tux, which is from License
to Kill.
Thanks to Yud
for sending in these DVD screenshots.

All Bonds
Hoax:
This
could quite possibly have been the biggest scam in Goldeneye's
history. In a gaming magazine's April Fool's issue, they
posted what they called the "All Bonds Cheat".
The 'cheat' also featured George Lazenby, who played James
Bond in only one film.
It was quite believable, especially since the completed
cheat menu had an uneven 23 cheats, leaving a single blank
space at the bottom.
To earn this cheat, you were supposed to complete the Aztec
Mission, on 007 difficulty, in under nine minutes. If this
wasn't tough enough, you had to have the enemy settings on
the highest possible difficulty.
Here's
the screenshot that the a magazine published. It shows
four Bonds in the Temple.
And
now, a screenshot from the final game where I tried to
line up the characters in the same positions as in the
other screenshot... I could not position the characters
at the same angles like the other screenshot.
And here are two
more shots from the magazine. One shot of the 'All Bonds'
in the cheat menu, and another shot of the Bonds on selection
in Multiplayer. The photos here are different than the ones
that are accessed with Gamesharks.
The 'All Bonds (Multi)' text doesn't look right either.
If you look closely, you can tell that it's slightly different
than the rest of the cheat text.
WHY?
All of the things that were removed from
Goldeneye tend to be blamed on 'time constraints' and 'memory
constraints'. The 'All Bonds' characters have to be a different
story, because they were already in the game... But were mysteriously
removed.
The most logical explanation, would be
the issue of rights to use the likeness' of the James Bond actors
in a Bond video game.
I've have heard one story, which seems
to offer a good explanation as to how the Bonds came to be removed
from Goldeneye...
A
new Bond film seems to be released every few years. But there's
quite a gap between License to Kill (1989) and Goldeneye (1995).
Apparently, Timothy Dalton who starred in License to Kill had
a dispute with MGM, and didn't want to be involved with MGM or
James Bond again.
When
Rareware was creating Goldeneye 007, Dalton somehow found out.
Since he didn't want to be associated with James Bond anymore,
Rare had all kinds of legal issues to deal with. As a result,
the 'All Bonds' characters were dropped from the game.
A comment from Rareware,
concerning the infamous 'All Bonds' characters:
"Yes, it was the
hope of the team that they would be available to play, but for
various reasons they weren't. You might be interested to know
that the team played a memorial deathmatch before they were removed,
with the goal of one hundred kills."
Rare didn't seem to try and coverup this
'All Bonds' issue. Evidence of the 'All Bonds' appears in the
instruction booklet, in a promo video, and a screenshot in an
advertisement. It's quite possible that Rareware wanted us to
know of the 'All Bonds' characters, and to let us know that they
had hoped to include them.
Despite the rumors floating
around on the net, you can't actually get the 'All Bonds' characters
with Gameshark or Action Replay - Only the photos remain in the
game.
This screenshot shows one of the next best things though. The
code simply replaces Natalya, Trevelyan, and Xenia with three
other 'Bonds'.
In a poll previously
conducted on this website, visitors chose the Citadel as their
favorite 'beta' thing that was removed from Goldeneye.
Realistically though, the Citadel was likely just a rough level
designed for testing purposes, as Rare said it was.
Closely following the Citadel in the poll, were the 'All Bonds'
characters. Being able to choose the former James Bond actors would
have no doubt been a huge bonus to what was already an incredible
game.
