THE BETA ARCHIVES:

Exact quote from Nintendo Power magazine in an issue previewing Goldeneye before completion: "After escaping from Trevelyan's trap at the monument graveyard, James is apprehended by the Russian authorities. Bond tries to tell his interrogator about Ourumov's crooked operation, but the general interrupts the interrogation, frames Bond for the murder of the interrogator, and attempts to shoot 007 "for trying to escape". Bond has no choice but to flee the prison and seek refuge in the nearby archives. The layout of the archive rooms in the game replicates the floor plan used in the movie."

So the above suggests that Ourumov was in the Archives at one time. Actually, it tells us that Ourumov was there. Too bad there are no REAL screenshots of this.

Okay, we now have a level without major changes. The main things changed here, are guards and the levels objects (boxes, desks, lamps, ect.) The biggest change in the level, is the fact that it did not have the "secret" passageway that leads from the hall to the guard room with the guards armed with double DD44s. In this map, you can't tell if the other passageway is there or not. This map can be a bit confusing, so I've explained it all below, including screenshots of the current version, later in on this page.

One thing that can be seen, better in this zoomed pic of the above map, is the existence of desk blotters on some of the office desks. With a Gameshark, you can modify Bond's PP7 in the Interrogation room where you start off the level, to one of those same desk blotters: 801D1919  0009(right pic) If you approach it though, you'll pick it up and use it just like a PP7. The code is for the appearance of the item only.

From the overhead view of the two offices, (above), we can compare them to the offices that exist there now. The left office (left), has the desk moved to the side, and filing cabinets in front of the windows. The right office (right pic), has the desk turned around, as well as boxes and a filing cabinet added to that room.

Here's what appears to be a later screenshot of the beta level (left). The only thing changed in this office, is the green light fixture that hung from the ceiling. As you compare it with the completed version (right), nothing else, except the missing glass is noticeable.

Here you can see a Russian Infantry guard in the Archives. I don't know why there would be a Russian Soldier along with them though. You can see in the background, the orange wood desk, which is now dark (right pic). You can also see in the beta shot, the reflection on the glass. Also, a light fixture in the office, which have been removed, and crates that have been added in the hallway.

Again, the Russian Infantry in the Archives. Notice the big red blood splatter when the guard gets shot. Also, there is a visible green light fixture hanging from the ceiling, that has been removed (right pic). And, a filing cabinet has since been added in that hall, and a box at the end of the hall.

In the finished version of the game, one of those lone light fixtures hangs from the ceiling in the Depot's train station. Also, the station also has the rusty, Archives doors. (screenshot non beta).

The shot (left) here implies that the Shotgun was once available in the Archives. If it were a cheat, you would need Infinite Ammo, and then the ammo would not read 60, but 100. One thing I discovered when making the "Now" shot of this location (right), is that I could not get far enough back, like in the original. This could possibly mean that the stairs were wider at one time.

A nice, big outside shot of the Archive grounds. (Sorry about the download time) Nothing has changed, and I haven't included a "now" screenshot. The only thing that I was able to pick out, is that the white building, seen between the two yellow buildings, is more visible. Possible because the other buildings were moved just a but closer together?

We've all seen this shot, and of course many people believe that Bond was left handed. It’s actually a mirrored shot, and can be flipped back (right). But, the level still has changed, and that's what caused the confusion. In the final version, there's no way to get this shot, even if you do mirror it. The book cases, and stairs are on opposite sides.

You can see from this shot that I took, compared with the above right shot. There aren't bookcases there. The bookcases are on the other side, to Bond's right. And, in the above right pic, you can see that there are even bookcases below that level, where there is nothing but a wall now. A lot of furniture rearrangements have been made in this level.

Here, the game is very near to completion (left). It is exactly the level that we know now, except for what's outside the window. White in the beta shot, and brick in the now shot (right). It's just a minor difference, but I thought that I'd point it out.

Here are two Japanese beta pics. A Russian Infantry guard, as well as railings on the stairs that look rather blue.

Another Russian Infantry, and the infamous removed Archives overhead lamps. Also, different crates than are in the final version.

Okay, I know this map can be a bit hard to understand at first, so I've labeled it, along with some "now" screenshots of the final version of the game.

As I said before, there isn’t the secret passage that leads to the one room. Where it should be, I've included a dotted yellow line.

All shots below are non beta. But compare them with those locations on the beta map.

A: (Basement) Outside of the interrogation room. No change, just to let you know where I am.

B: In the basement, where lots of boxes have since been added.

C: Again in the basement, where even more boxes have been added.

D: The office that I mentioned in one of the above sections, with the added filing cabinets.
E: The other office, with the reversed desk, added boxes and filing cabinet. F: The upstairs hallway, where a box has actually been removed.

Gameshark Codes:

Sorry. Not much, other than the locations of the boxes and other objects have changed. I'm trying to find codes to modify the boxes, as well as the lamps to deskmats. When they're found, I'll put them here. The only code so far is to change Bond's PP7 one the table at the start to the old desk mat:

801D1919 0009
