THE BETA BUNKER:
|
I
have to admit, I don't have much to go on for this level. Just a few screens,
and the rest is all improvised with my thoughts and my own screenshots.
I do have a bunch of stuff though, along with some of my own ideas, and
noticed leftovers... |
|
One thing that is strange about
the Bunker levels, is the fact that James Bond never even visited Severnaya
in the movie. And yet in the game, he's there for two missions. It is
my opinion that there was only one Bunker at first. In the level folder,
the background information for the first Surface and Bunker are exactly
the same. And, in the first Bunker, it seems that the programmers went
out of their way to make it look under construction, or different than
the second Bunker.
|
When the Goldeneye weapon was
fired in the movie, there were Russian Soldiers in the building. Now,
it's the Arctic Commandos. The Soldiers are in the first Bunker, supporting
my theory that the Bunker was split into two levels after being planned
for only one.
The shot here has no visible
differences with the completed game, but it was in a magazine with lots
of other good beta shots. It would almost be wrong not to include it...
|
It has long been debated, after
a few Gameshark fakes, if Bond's silhouette actually was on the Bunker
screen. Well, it was, as is seen in this official beta shot. It's strange
that the enemies would have a shot of Bond on their screens... I think
that it was just a temporary fill until the rest of the computer images
were completed. Once again, Bond has the Laser. That would have made the
game easier, and is could possibly be why it was removed.
|
|
Another
one of the few existing shots of the Beta Bunker. Bond is wearing his
blue suit instead of the black vest he wears in that level now. Again,
just a minor change, but I think 007 wore this suit for most levels, until
his other suits were made.
|
|
 In
the above shot, Bond wears his blue suit... But that's different now...
But with a Gameshark, you can play a strange empty Bunker. I thought it
was just a code to take every item out of it, but when you get out of
Bond's body, he's wearing the blue suit! This means it's a completely
different level than the Bunker you play in mission! It appears as if
the level was scrapped or something, and started over. It's a completely
different level, that's for sure. But why did they leave this empty one
in the game? Thanks to SubDrag for this info.
|
|
 With
a Gameshark, you can make this screen appear, which was done in these
two shots of the Bunker (left) and Control (right). You have to blow up
the screen first, and instead of turning black, it turns to the Bond silhouette.
|
|
 In
the completed game, the silhouette does appear in the Aztec computer room
(left). But with the Gameshark code, if we blow up the screens, the Bond
silhouettes appear instead of the blacked out screen. The code makes the
levels bright, and often black and white.
|
|
Here
is a screenshot of the Gameshark code in effect. It's also known as the
"No shadows code", although some parts of some levels end up getting darker.
I wonder how the lighting of the levels can make the Bond silhouettes.
Also, this code makes your game folders bright red. Very strange.
|
|
 Bond
is firing the old KF7 (left). Compared with now (right), we can see that
everything except the gun remains the same. One thing that can be noticed,
is how much the new KF7 zooms in, compared with the old one. It has the
aimer onscreen, so it should be zoomed in like the right pic. Finally,
a change for the better.
|
|
 Here's
a Bunker shot, where we can see everything is unchanged. But Bond doesn't
have any bullets in his magazine when he's reloading. In the final game,
the 0 stays onscreen until he reloads, and changes to a 7 without disappearing.
But is it a beta shot? Probably not. If you look closely, a smudge is
visible where the magazine ammo should be. I suggest a little bit of editing
was done here...
|
|
 In
the first Bunker, there is a board over this location in the computer
room. In the second Bunker, it's a wall. It looks as if something were
planned by having that board there, but as we see in the second Bunker,
after the building is done, it's still just a wall. Why would that one
board be there, while the rest of the level's walls are completed as walls?
Unless there once was a small room there, and that was where you originally
downloaded the data.
|
|
 Another
strange thing, is the Bunker's screen. It's all right in the first Bunker
(left), but it's blank in the second Bunker. In the movie, it was fully
lit with the world map when the Goldeneye was fired, which is the second
Bunker, but when it’s fired in the game, there is just a plain black screen.
It's fully lit up in the first Bunker, when the level is supposively under
construction.
|
|
Okay,
I was wrong. The screen does light up... After Natalya checks one the
computer, the screen comes to life. Thanks to SubDrag for sending me this
info.
|
|
Another
odd thing is the Commandant in the first Bunker. There are only 3 of them
in the game. The first in the Dam is rumored to have given Bond the boat
key, and this one in the Bunker has a PP7 Special Issue, the gun that
Bond uses. It almost makes me think that there was a purpose for these
strange guards at an earlier time.
|
|
 Okay,
there was a kitchen here in the movie, but I think that it looks odd.
All that's here is what looks like a counter, with cupboards. This may
be the way that the programmers intended it, I'm just pointing it out.
|
|
 This
has nothing to do specifically with the Bunker, but here's a beta alarm.
You can replace both alarms in the Bunker with it, as well as one of hundreds
of other objects. This alarm really does look strange, and that's likely
why it was changed.
|
|
A
"Goldeneye" computer. Some people believe that it's not found anywhere
in the game, but here it is, the only computer like it in the entire game.
Is it possible that Ourumov once used it to fire the weapon, explaining
why this row of computers is still here? Nah.
