BETA DAM:

From what information I've gathered, I've concluded that the Dam was one of the levels that received the most changes from the Beta version. It's partially because, when the game was first tested, the developers concluded that it was too challenging and complicated for the first level of the game. So everything was scrapped, except for the single objective, Bungee jump from platform. Despite the huge changes to this level, very few screenshots of the Beta version being played exist.

I tried to make a similar shot from above. Everything, other than the KF7 of course, remain the same. One minor detail, is the pale red and white caution stripes that seem to have been added over the vents on the side, beside the Russian Soldier. But the picture is fuzzy, and I think I can make out visible stripes. Also, how blue the sky is, compared to the darkness now.

Here is a "beta" shot, and it shows that Objective D: Bungee jump from platform is COMPLETED. How can this be? When you jump off the ledge, the mission ends, and you can't pause to get this screen. In Q's Briefing before the level: "At the bottom of the jump, use the piton gun." This evidence informs us that the mission did not end after the jump, but you possibly had to gain entrance to the Facility, eliminating the idea that the platform at the bottom was put there only for detail use in a cinema scene. Thanks to SubDrag for informing me of this picture.

Here is a screenshot of the objectives screen. But it's for Secret Agent...

On Secret Agent in the final game, you don't install the modem or intercept data backup. Just interesting how the objectives per agent level were tweaked before completion.

Thanks to Ian Rogers for informing me about this screenshot from the booklet.

The first thing that is seen when starting the level. The Truck. Why is there a big green truck that follows the same path as you, stops if you go in front, and then eventually pulls over and stops beside a guard tower. It's been concluded that it's a leftover from OBJECTIVE A: DESTROY MILITARY TRUCK. It's definitely a highlight in the level. Two different cinema intros include the truck as the center point of the shot. Meaning that it definitely wasn't there just for decoration. (screenshots are non-beta)

Another notable location is the trapdoor in the Dam's guardhouse. It's just a trapdoor that serves no purpose. It's suspected that it once contained the mines necessary to destroy the green Military truck. The trapdoor is close to where the truck parks, so it's a very likely possibility. (screenshot non-beta)

Another point, is Bond getting the boat's key to head off to the distant island. No one is positive how this would occur. Most people now agree that you got there with the green Soviet boat that can be seen with a Gameshark, here. Most people believe that the key was obtained from a Double Agent, this Russian Commandant guard. It would explain why he's the lone Commandant in that level. Also, the two other Commandants in the game, one carries a PP7 Special Issue, which only Bond uses, and the other, carries the key to Safe in the Surface. Very interesting. (screenshots non-beta)

Let's not forget the actual trip to the island itself. Most people, including myself, have concluded that the island once contained the Bungee equipment and Piton gun that Bond needed to beat the level. The piton gun is actually mentioned in the levels Q Branch, where Q tells 007 to use the piton gun at the bottom of the jump. Maybe you actually had to use it to complete the level. As for the Bungee equipment, the game probably wouldn't let you off the platform until you had it. The piton gun can be obtained with a Gameshark, it appears in the inventory, but it's a glitched grenade weapon. (screenshot non-beta)

Now, the island. It's quite a mysterious subject, and Rare will not answer any questions. They did admit "That your character would have to reach the island to complete an objective." I'm happy that Rare said that, instead of some lame, only their for detail excuse. The island remains, with its inactive drone gun and empty guard tower. The island must have been "scrapped" long before completion, because the windows of the guard tower still contain "beta glass". (screenshots non-beta) For lots of island screenshots, check out my Dam Island section. Lots of information there.

We did not really know the purpose of the Island's drone gun, until now. It turns out that you actually did have to destroy it, along with the drone guns on the Runway. It would be a bit complicated, because you would need to destroy it here, or your plane would be shot down by it two levels later. So you have to destroy the guns on the runway instead.

I've noticed the manhole covers before, but I thought they were just detail. But you can actually see them while inside the Dam, looking up at them! They were meant to be used at one time, but there were problems with the guards using them, much like the way guards use ladders, so the manhole idea was scrapped. (screenshots non beta)

Okay, this was probably useless, and we all know about it. The little grate by the guardhouse, where you can look down inside the ops room and shoot the guards. It seems strange that they would put something like that here, but it was probably just put here for fun.

One more thing, is the existence of the platform at the bottom of the Dam. Most people now know that you can get there with a Gameshark. A question that has not been answered, is why the platform remains. I think it's safe to say, that it was just left there, like the island. You can't see it, unless you use the level override code to disable the level's ending. You will fall right to the bottom onto this platform. With the out of body code, we can take a better look at it.

Again with the out of body code, we can see how big the structure is. It's quite big to be there for completeness. And, that's proven in the next paragraph below. (screenshot non-beta)

Aha! Vents! This vent can bee seen with the no endings and no clipping code. It's pretty hard to do, because you slip quickly and slide down past. If you time it right, you can stop and have a look, like I did capturing these shots. This suggests that there once was a cinema scene of this level. Or maybe you did in fact have to open the hatch yourself, like in the train. We'll not likely ever discover the true meaning of this. (screenshots non-beta)

Thanks to Craig Stickland for discovering the technique of viewing the vents. Check his site, Goldeneye 64 Home for the details on how to see this vent with a Gameshark. It can be hard to do.

ç This is definitely a fake, pasted from the existing beta Rocket Launcher from the Facility. The texture of the Launcher itself, is different than the clarity of the docks. Still, I've included it with a "now" shot, where nothing has changed. A definite fake.

*Finally, I've hacked the code for Beta alarms in the Dam! You can replace the existing alarms with the double Beta alarms shown here. I think the level actually had these alarms at one time, but I can't say for sure.
