THE BETA EGYPTIAN:
|
|
There
is very little to make a section here. The early levels were the ones
that received the most changes, and this was a level that was made much
later, and it didn't have time for major changes. In this shot, we see
the huge explosion, which is caused by Baron Samedi appearing. Nothing
here to compare, it's just a beta shot with no changes since.
|
|
The
one major change, was the level's name. Instead of EGYPTIAN, it was known
as CRYPT. Why the change? Well, if it was called Crypt now, we'd have
wished it was called Egyptian. My guess is that it was changed simply
by preference of the programmers, in other words, they liked the Egyptian
name better.
But how can I be positive that
Crypt refers to this level? Well, the programmers forgot something...
The name Crypt appears on the pause screen! This means it must have been
changed much later. The doors in the memory are also called "cryptdoor1A"
and so on. This screen is not with a Gameshark, it really does appear
like this. Check for yourself. Most people (including myself) have never
even checked it before... Until now.
|
|
And
of course, here's the text with the Gameshark memory editor. We can see
that Baron Samedi has a caption that he should have said. It was removed,
but still inside the memory. Just laughing. I guess they decided that
the voice would sound spookier, and it does.

Here's another Beta shot of Egypt. You can see that nothing has changed.
I've included it simply because it's a beta shot. Also, it was fairly
early in development, (January of 97), even earlier than some other Beta
shots we have. What surprises me, is that they actually had this level
back then. I always thought it was made nearing completion.
|
|
Here's
the Baron himself, who would have spoken the words above. For once, and
actual Beta change for the better. The game basically features captions,
because it takes up a lot less memory. If you can't understand the words
above in the memory editor, it goes "Baron Samedi: Ha Ha Ha Ha..."
|
|
 Another
strange thing about the Egyptian, is it's basement, which seems to have
no real purpose. There are no guards down there, and it's where I always
make my trip to the final showdown with Samedi. But it would seem strange
to include this to make the game EASIER... As seen in Aztec, the drone
guns, guards sneaking up with Lasers... For the final level of a game,
it's a piece of cake. It makes the final level of the game very easy,
instead of passing through the drone gun trap, right è.
|
|
 And
another thing, which has nothing to do with Beta at all, just for interests
sake: The Golden Gun Room... You have to walk on the correct tiles to
reach the Golden Gun. There is nothing else in the game like this. You
can't even destroy the drone guns. (Okay, you can, but I mean in a normal
mission with no cheats. I said that, because I know someone would have
e-mailed me about it.) And if you leave, they reappear mysteriously by
the time you come back...
