BETA MULTIPLAYER:
Of course, the biggest thing
surrounding Beta Multiplayer is the "All Bonds". That's not what this
section is about, but info on that is in my Beta
All Bonds section.
The Goldeneye 007 Multiplayer
option was added to the game much later in development. The team apparently
fooled around, and tried playing with more than one player at a time,
and since the basic programming for movement was there, it wasn't difficult
to incorporate Multiplayer into Goldeneye. Multiplayer was a great idea,
and it would almost seem like half a game if it was not included. Although
Multiplayer was added later on, there were still numerous changes to it.

|
Characters:
One of the things featured in Beta Multiplayer, is the fact that the character
select pictures appeared in a different order than they do now.

|
|
The
screenshot I made, above, is based on the beta screenshot ç
left, along with the Gameshark value digits for each picture, which actually
does follow this order. Also, Mishkin does not appear here. Mishkin's
picture value is located after the famous Bond villains, and even after
the Question mark picture.

In this table, I've included
the order of the character select pictures. Each picture has a number,
the numbers can be tested with video game enhancers. This list of characters
follows the same order as the above screenshot. The last two pictures
in the list are the Question Mark, and Mishkin, neither one is seen in
the above shot. The Question Mark characters were added much later, and
Mishkin's picture is located after that. Mishkin's picture is even after
the famous Bond villains. Is it possible that Mishkin was a late addition
to the character selection?
Now that the all Bonds have
been removed, the rest of the character details:
"There
are a total of four additional hidden characters, so depending how far
you progress in your missions, you could choose from a dozen different
characters."
-Nintendo Power (when previewing the game.)
So lets think about that...
The four characters would have to be none other than Baron Samedi, Jaws,
Mayday, and Oddjob. The way they make it sound, it seems that you did
not earn each character at the same time. And twelve characters...
Meaning that we could only select the characters who have their pictures
on the select screen, and none of the guards who have question marks.
For once, Rare has actually made a good decision. Having the vast character
selection of 29 characters makes Multiplayer more fun, and interesting.
|
|
Levels:
"When
you first start playing GoldenEye, you can choose between nine different
multiplayer arenas, but as you progress through the levels in the Mission
Game, you'll eventually earn access to two special areas, including a
secret arena you won't find until you complete all of the missions as
a 00 Agent." -Nintendo
Power
Two special areas... Egyptian
is definitely one, but would Caverns be the other? My guess would be yes.
According to the above statement, you were allowed access to such levels
as the Facility, Bunker, and Archives before playing them in Mission mode.
It was changed, likely to encourage you to play Mission mode, and open
up more levels.
|
|
In
the final game, most of us realize that we cannot play with 4 players
in any of the levels in the bottom row. You can play with up to 3 players
in Bunker, Archives, and Caverns, but only 2 players in Egyptian. Why
is this so? Evidence here shows that the Bunker once allowed 4 players,
in this famous shot with Sean Connery. And Nintendo Power lists
2 vs 2 in Egyptian as the setup of choice. Gameshark allows us to play
with four players in these levels, and it can be slow at some times. This
is the reason for why 4 players cannot play these levels.
But levels like the Complex,
or Library are far bigger than the Archives. The programmers wanted the
Multiplayer levels to go in order as they appear in Mission, and Archives
comes after Bunker. It would seem odd that you could only select 3 players
in one level, then four in the next. Kind of a stupid reason, but that's
what they decided.
|
|
But
while using Gameshark, you can force the game to allow you to play with
4 players in the level you wish. At some times it does slow down in some
levels, but they're usually not too bad. But it's an inconveinience to
be slowed down every so often, so Rare had to remove this option. Thankfully
GS was created. See codes at the bottom of this page for each level.
|
|
Also,
there is the existence of the Statue and Cradle Multiplayer levels, with
Gameshark. These levels are not glitchy like other levels activated with
GS. They have starting points, weapons, and armor. This means that they
would have been included as Multiplayer levels at one time. I've heard
that these two levels were replaced by Caverns and Egyptian, and to the
left, is a screenshot that I made to show what having these levels would
look like.
|
|
In
this shot of the Multiplayer Options screen, we can see that there is
no option to change your aim/auto aim/ sight/ settings. Just a cool thing
to point out.
Thanks to Ian
Rogers for informing me
about this screenshot from the booklet.
