THE BETA RUNWAY:

From what I know, we do not have any shots from the beta version of the Runway. What we do have are leftovers, stories, and of course, Gameshark codes to try and piece it all together.

The question that we all want to know. Was there a motorbike in the game? Rare never made an official response to this, but they did point out the motorbike model in the Surface. Then we discovered that we could modify the game's vehicles to a full sized bike, shown here. This proves that it was once a full scale bike.

The Goldeneye 007 Team did intend to have it included into the Runway level, just like in the movie. The problems with this, were difficulties in the programming. Bond would have had to chase the moving plane after stealing a bike from a guard that rode it. It would have been very difficult to make it all run smoothly together, so eventually the idea was scrapped. Another barrier to this, was the actual driving of a motorbike in a first person shooter game. It would have been difficult to make it work correctly.

Another thing that has been noticed, is the existence of the Biker character in Multiplayer. Was he somehow involved with the motorbike? And since the bike was removed, he was probably just kept as an extra character.

So why was there a huge tank put in the level instead of the motorbike we all wanted? It turns out that before completion of the Streets, the tank was tested on the Runway, which was a good wide level to use it in. The team enjoyed driving it, and wanted to include it in another level besides the Streets, so the Runway was an easy candidate for it.

And of course, these doors that can't be opened. I'm not at all sure about whether they were opened at one time or not. I've heard that it was where to motorbike came from, but I now think that they were never opened at all, since the bike driving never was completed. The doors were only put here in case of that, but were left for detail.

Everyone has noticed the doors here, with the message that they lead back to the Gasplant. Many people think that you were able to get back in, but that doesn't make any sense. They're here for completeness, in the fact that you just exited those doors to get to this level. What doesn't make sense, is that you just exited those doors, but now appear on the opposite wall, with a guard patrolling in front of those doors. Probably just a mistake by Rare.

Oh yeah, heh. The doors can also be modified with a Gameshark. Did they once look like this? I think they probably did for a short time, but I can't say for sure. All this is based on one Facility bathroom shot.

Another thing that some people have noticed, is the Mission select picture. They say that the missile battery can't be seen in it. True, but it’s just barely noticeable from that angle in the game. In the select picture, the building for it is there, so it must have been there.

And what's with the huge structures here? It's all detail, as parts of the Facility. It makes the level very complete, in the sense that you just exited the Facility, so now you should be able to see it. With a Gameshark you can moonjump and see more of it.

Things that can be seen while moonjumping. Vents! Possibly supposed to be the ones that Bond crawled in through? Also, plenty of windows, even though there are no windows in the level. The programmers did an excellent job of filling in the level gaps, at least for the first few levels. The later Bunch have little or no visible signs of previous levels.
