THE BETA SURFACE:

Gameshark code:
810452E4 C0C0
810452E6 C001

Code by Wreck7
The Surface that we know in the final version of Goldenye has a pink/purple sky. But in the beta screenshots, the sky appears to be bright and white. Wreck7 has hacked a Gameshark code that gives you a white sky in Surface 1.

Quote from Nintendo Power when previewing Goldeneye: "The Space Weapons Control Center in Severnaya, Siberia is the electronic nerve center of the GoldenEye operations and all of the other top-secret projects in the Russian Space Defense network. Xenia Onatopp and General Ourumov, the corrupt head of Russia's Space Division, use the Tiger Helicopter to break into the weapons control center and steal the cards for the GoldenEye satellites. While the security cameras identify General Ourumov as friendly, they won't recognize you. If any of the cameras in the facility spot you, an alarm will sound and alert the guards."

The Surface is a level that did not undergo major changes before it was finally completed. Basically, the only changed things were the shades and graphic colors, as well as the color of the fog. To my knowledge, there was no change in objectives.

We can see in the above shot, that it's very bright, with white fog. Compared with now (right), it's darker, and the sky is purple/pink. I'll point out that Bond has a PP7 Special Issue, rather than the silenced now. I knew somebody was going to e-mail me about that! The paths and angles of the snow banks all appear to still be the way that they were.

As these following pictures suggest, you used to be able to get the Taser in the Surface. In fact, two out of the few known Surface shots include the Taser. Bond's here at the ventilation tower, that appears to be missing it's ladder. It has the step though, which is strange. The right shot with the ladder shown is non beta, taken by me.

Here at one of the cabins, again with the old Taser (left). You could see a lot more of the communications dish in the old version, now, there's a tree wall blocking most of it. Also, the cabin's shadow had an angle change, and the door to the cabin is now orange (right pic) instead of the dark brown seen in the beta shot.

Here's a new Beta shot, from the rough location of the above left shot. It's closer to the fence, and we can see it's just the posts. The fence hasn't been added yet. Notice when compared with the final version, the dish is completely visible. Now, trees have been added.

And here is another shot, just behind where the above shots were taken from. It might not be a beta picture, if you look at the sky, it's purple like it is now. The one minor thing is how all guards have Sniper Rifles. Not many guards from this level carry them, but it is possible to get a screen like this. Also notice how the fence has chainlink on it. Probably the game was almost completed when this shot was taken.

This is just a minor detail, and probably is just a simple error. But if you look down inside the ventilation tower, you see both doors are grey, and when you start in that room in the next level (Bunker), one is brown.

An overhead shot of the beta Surface level, allows us to see almost the entire level. The lone section at the top right is where you start. The layout of the level is the same as it is now. A few texture shades have changed though, compare it to an overhead view of the level now, below.

We can see that the helipad has changed. The white cross has been removed, and the yellow H has been put there. You can see how light the paths are now, they're a light blue/gray color. In the above, beta shot, the paths seem brownish purple. Of course I had to take this overhead shot with no fog, otherwise you would hardly be able to see a thing. I used the level's moonjump code, but If I got much higher, the level below disappears.
