Seven Years of 007

September 24 2006 marked 7 whole years of the Goldeneye website...
In some ways, I remember it like it was yesterday... But seven years is a fair chunk of time. I'm posting some of my original thoughts and impressions about the game, as well as a bunch of screenshots that I don't think were ever featured on the website... But If you've seen some of 'em before, don't shoot me.

The first time I picked up a controller to play Goldeneye, only the original 8 characters were available... And the coolest ones were taken.

I picked General Ourumov, and was dubbed "the dude with the big hat!" for the entire match...

It's amazing that I remember some of the little details... Like how the KF7 Soviet reminded me of a Duracell battery... And how the blood splatter all over Bond made him look like a butcher wearing a tuxedo.

Knock knock...
Anybody home?

The crazy shootouts in the Archives (both in Mission and Multiplayer) was time well wasted.

A badass guard armed with double Klobbs is about to be caught in a massive explosion.

Each shotgun blast fires a spread pattern of five "bullets"... Here, you can see every single shot hitting the guard in the chest.

It started out as an innocent game of office paintball...

Now, we've got a homicide investigation on our hands.

What a pretty gun you have.

This guard was found mysteriously stabbed, in a pool a blood.

Where the hell are we gonna bury him? We're in the middle of frozen Russia!

Hats off...
Some fine knife throwing knocks the hat off the guard, who remains unharmed... At least for now, anyway.

An explosive shootout with a grenade-happy guard.

I told ya I'd bust a cap in your ass!

Before I owned this game, I was unlocking cheats on a borrowed copy. The target time for the Control mission was 10:00 on Secret Agent. It sounded insane, because the control was such a tough mission... But I somehow believed I could accomplish the feat. I pulled it off, and was rewarded with Infinite Ammo... Awesome!

The satisfaction of knowing that your bullets have hit their mark... When the gun flies, the guard dies.

Apparently, the bottom of the dam is guarded as well.

Screenshot from SubDrag, showing the "beta" alarm on the Dam's island.

Another shot from SubDrag, showing that the game's memory has presets for items on the island.

Another famous island, is the "James Bond" island in Thailand.

This was the location of the famous duel between James Bond and Francisco Scaramanga in The Man With the Golden Gun. Following the film, the island has become a huge tourist destination.

The Simpsons have probably featured about a dozen 007 spoofs...

One of my favorites is the intro where Homer Simpson fires a shot through the famous James Bond gun barrel.

Japanese cheat menu... Maintains English words like "DK", "PP7" and "RC-P90".

Mad scientists in the "beta" Facility.

Yo, gimme your bike!

Mayday makes a surprise appearance in the Jungle.

Trevelyan attempts to perform Moonraker Laser surgery on 007.

Something else I didn't know about Goldeneye until recently is that they also created a pinball machine based on the Goldeneye movie.

I bet you could probably find a used one on e-Bay for a few thousand dollars... But the Goldeneye 007 N64 game is still the better buy.
